In the study, 13 HIV-positive staff members of different grades, nationalities, duty stations, gender and sexual orientations were interviewed about their experiences of working in the United Nations system. One Stop Clinic and Key Responses to AIDS of the United Nations System

UN PlOne Stop Clinicus has completed a case study on the “One Stop Clinic” in Kenya. The “One Stop Clinic” is a service offered by the UN system in Kenya that provides access to HIV-related treatment to UN staff living with HIV. The UN system complements 20% of the treatment costs while the staff members have 80% of the costs reimbursed by their respective agencies through the medical insurance scheme. The service also gives emphasis on confidentiality given the stigma that still exists in Kenya.

The UN Plus case study looks at the mechanism of the “One Stop Clinic” from its history to the current set-up through a series of interviews of the key personnel. It not only illustrates the lessons learned, but also attempts to address key responses by the UN system to the improved access to HIV treatment, which can be replicated by other duty stations.

The executive summary is available here and the full report here.

 (a) UN Malawi holds UN Wellness Day

The UN in Malawi recently held their annual UN Wellness Day at Peak Gardens in the capital city, Lilongwe, with the aim of reminding the UN personnel of the importance of adopting health seeking behavior.

Malawi01Ms. Mia Seppo, the Resident Coordinator, led the UN Country Team in signing the pledge against stigma and discrimination in the UN work place in Malawi and in reaffirming the UNCT’s commitment to zero stigma and discrimination in the UN workplace and beyond.

During the official opening, the UN Plus Malawi chapter led the candlelight memorial to remember all those who have lost their lives to AIDS. The ceremony was facilitated by Mrs. Evelyn Jonazi, UN Plus Advisory Group Chairperson, and Mrs. Miriam Nyoni, a member of the Country Chapter Executive Committee.

UNDERSTANDING AND RESPECTING DIFFERENT LEVELS OF HIV DISCLOSURE

UNPlus_HIV_ DisclosureDisclosure of one’s HIV status is an extremely sensitive issue. The extent to which people living with HIV decide to keep their HIV status private is a personal choice, and we need to respect that decision in any context or any setting. However, we often encounter situations where such sensitivity is taken lightly and one’s personal decision and choice is not fully respected.
UN Plus has developed a guidance entitled “Understanding and Respecting Different Levels of HIV Disclosure,” to raise further awareness of disclosure of HIV status among those who are engaged in the AIDS response in the UN system. Please download and share this document with as many colleagues and friends as possible.

UN Plus Joins the Zero Discrimination Campaign in Malawi

By Evelyn Jonazi (UN Plus/UNAIDS Malawi)

Leadership in the AIDS response requires a strong sense of social justice and social change. In order to end AIDS, ensuring health, dignity and security as well as enabling social, cultural and work environment for those affected by the epidemic is critical. At the same time, stigma and discrimination of people living with HIV remain a major challenge that needs to be addressed.

This is why UN Plus Malawi joined the Zero Discrimination Day led by the First Lady of Malawi. UN Plus was at the heart of the campaign on the day. In solidarity, we can halt HIV and end AIDS.

UN Plus DRC on the UN Day

With much enthusiasm from his study visit to Rwanda, our representative in DRC, Mr. Oba Sebahire, participated in the UN Day held at the MONUSCO compound in Bukavu. Having set up his booth next to the HIV Section of MONUSCO, he handed out some posters, flyers and other information materials of both UN Plus and UN Cares to such agencies as UNFPA, FAO, UNICEF and UNOPS.

Mr. Sebahire feels that there are much more to be done in DRC to disseminate information about UN Plus and UN Cares among UN staff members since only few of them are aware of who they are.
