bhatupe.jpgBhatupe Mhango

She is the first international UN Plus Co-ordinator.  Bhatupe was instrumental to the establishment of the country chapter of UN PLUS in Malawi which currently has a membership of 11 staff members and is continuing to grow in strength and numbers.  Through one of the UN+ in Malawi activities, Bhatupe led a national anti-stigma and discrimination campaign titled the `NO MORE SHAME` campaign in which over 50 positive activists in Malawi participated.

She is the author of Positively Positive, a book on overcoming the challenges of living with HIV for young, Christian women (Kachere series, 2006). In 2005 she produced a personal documentary of her experience of living with HIV titled Open Up that has been disseminated both nationally and internationally for the use of youth programs working to dispel stigma and discrimination levels in the area of HIV.

Bhatupe has a background in political education, gender mainstreaming and HIV management.  Prior to joining UNAIDS-Geneva she worked with UNDP-Malawi.  She also served as Acting National Coordinator for the Konrad Adenauer Foundation Malawi office for two years.  Bhatupe is interested in the link between political governance and the AIDS response and this makes her a keen participant in advocating for the rights of positive people wherever she goes.  She has knowingly been living with HIV for over 5 years now.
